How to Photograph Receipts So They Scan Right, Even Long Ones

Good light, a flat receipt and scanning soon after shopping make the difference. Practical tips for long receipts, faded thermal paper and creased slips.

· 4 min read

A receipt scanner can only read what the photo shows. A crumpled slip shot in a dim car park, with half the total in shadow, will produce mistakes no matter how good the software is. The good news is that a few habits fix almost every problem, and none of them takes more than a few seconds.

Light: bright and even

Thermal receipts have low contrast to begin with, light grey print on off-white paper. Give the camera as much help as you can:

  • Use daylight or a bright room. A kitchen table under a ceiling light works well.
  • Avoid hard shadows. Your own phone and hand can cast a shadow over the receipt. Hold the phone slightly to the side of the light source, not between the light and the paper.
  • Avoid glare. Glossy receipts reflect lamps. Tilt the receipt or move the lamp until the shine is gone.
  • Flash is a last resort. It often creates a bright spot in the middle that washes out a line or two.

Flat: no curls, no folds

Receipts come out of the printer curled, and they spend the trip home in a pocket. Before you scan:

  • Lay the receipt on a flat, dark or contrasting surface. A dark table makes the edges easy to find.
  • Smooth out folds with your hand. If it keeps curling, put something light on the ends, a coin or the edge of a book, outside the area you are shooting.
  • Keep the phone parallel to the paper. Shooting at an angle stretches the text at one end.

The document scanner in Tasarruf crops and straightens the page automatically, which corrects small angles, but it cannot unfold a crease that hides a digit.

Long receipts: scan in parts

A weekly shop can produce a receipt longer than your forearm. Fitting all of it into one photo makes the text tiny. Instead, scan it in several parts:

  1. Start at the top: store name, date and the first lines.
  2. Move down so each part overlaps the previous one by a line or two.
  3. Finish with the bottom part, which must include the total, discounts, VAT and payment lines.

Tasarruf lets you add several pages for one receipt, so a long receipt stays one receipt with all its lines. The overlap matters: a line cut in half at the edge of two photos is a line that may be read wrong or missed.

Faded thermal paper: scan soon after shopping

Most till receipts are printed on thermal paper, which fades over time and with heat and light. A receipt left on a car dashboard or in a warm bag can lose its print much faster. Some fade enough that prices become hard to read even for a person.

The simple rule: scan the receipt the same day, ideally as soon as you get home. It is also the moment when you still remember what you bought, which makes reviewing easier.

If a receipt is already faint:

  • Use the brightest even light you have.
  • Try a slightly different angle to the light; faint print sometimes shows better with light from the side.
  • Pick the clearest photo from your gallery if you took one earlier. Tasarruf can import a photo from your gallery as well as from the camera.

Let the app tell you when to retake

Before anything is sent, Tasarruf reads the text on your phone to check that the photo is sharp and that a total is visible. If it is not, the app suggests a retake right away. If you get that suggestion, the fix is usually one of the points above: more light, flatter paper, or one more part for a long receipt.

After the scan: review what is highlighted

The server reads the store, date, lines, quantities, unit prices, discounts, VAT and total, then checks that everything adds up: lines to the total, quantity times unit price to the line total, VAT per rate and payments. Fields that fail these checks are highlighted on the review screen. You do not need to proofread every line, only the highlighted ones. Everything can still be corrected before saving.

Online orders: skip the camera entirely

If you shop online and receive an e-Arşiv or e-Fatura PDF, you do not need to photograph anything. Share the PDF into the app instead. See importing e-Arşiv and e-Fatura PDFs.

How Tasarruf helps

Tasarruf’s document scanner crops and straightens each page, takes long receipts in several parts, checks sharpness and a visible total on the phone before sending, and only asks you to review the fields that fail its checks.
